2-4 Players – 15-20 Minutes – Ages 8 and up
Game Object
Be the first to get your car across the city while avoiding Potholes and strategically placing your Patch and Pothole cards to outwit your opponents!
Components
The game is made up of two sets of cards. There are 64 square cards that are shuffled and placed in an 8 × 8 grid on the playing surface. Each player gets several Patch and Pothole cards depending on the number of players:
2 Players – 7 Patch and Pothole cards per player
3 Players – 6 Patch and Pothole cards per player
4 Players – 5 Patch and Pothole cards per player
Game Play
To begin the game the first player will flip over one card on the side of the grid closest to them. If that card shows a street the player will place their vehicle on that street as their starting point. If that card shows a Pothole their turn ends, and play continues with the next player. Once a player has their vehicle on a street they have a choice of four options on their turn.
Flip over a card that is horizontally or vertically adjacent to their current position. If that card reveals a street the player shall move their vehicle to that spot and their turn ends. If that card reveals a Pothole the player vehicle remains in its current position and their turn ends.
Place a round Pothole card on a street card or unrevealed card that is not occupied by a vehicle. A Pothole may not be placed which cuts off the only remaining path of any vehicle to the side of the board it must reach.
Place a round Patch card on a square revealed Pothole card except for the special Water Main Break and Sinkhole de Mayo potholes. A round Patch card may not be played on a previously played round Pothole card.
Move their vehicle to an unoccupied street or to a patched Pothole.
If adjacent to another vehicle, the vehicle may jump over that vehicle. If that square is not accessible (e.g., off the edge of the board or blocked by a third vehicle or a Pothole), the player may move to either space that is immediately adjacent (left or right) to the first vehicle. Multiple vehicles may not be jumped. Potholes may not be jumped.
The first player to reach the far side of the grid on a street is the winner.
Square Grid Cards
There are 64 3” square cards that are shuffled and dealt out in a 8 X 8 grid to make up the game board. The card backs have a yellow Pothole! sign. The front of the cards have either a street that a players car can be moved onto or a pothole which must be avoided or patched. Round Pothole and Patch Cards
There are 40 round cards that are Potholes or Patches. They can be played on a turn to block an opponent or to repair a pothole and open a street. The images below are from the beta test version of Pothole!
